Hey Family!
It sounds like NYC was a blast! The babies got some pretty sweet looking robots. This past week was so good for me too! We got to go on exchanges with Des Moines and Ankeny. Normally we just blitz their areas but for both of the exchanges we made them work our area for a little bit as well. The clock is ticking for us to get a baptism before Elder Blanchard goes home so we have been stepping it up. We found some sweet people to start teaching so hopefully we can get them progressing. It feels so good to actually have investigators! I feel like a real missionary again!
We found a way cool girl yesterday named Teija Smith. She is actually white despite what you may think with the name and she is here for school for the summer. She grew up Lutheran but has studied tons of different religions and is open and wants to come to church with us tomorrow. We are teaching her tonight where we plan on setting a date. I'm so excited to be able to apply our training and actually teach a real lesson!
As far as exchanges go, going with the spanish Elders is always a treat. This time I tried whipping out a little spanish to feel how missionary work is for Tyson. I must admit I was pretty proud of myself when I busted out,"Somos misionaros de la iglesia de Jesu Cristo de los santos de los ultimos dios". It seems that the whole spanish language really isn't as difficult as Tyson makes it out to be.
The Ankeny exchange is always the one I look forward to the most since it's my old stomping grounds. We got to have dinner with the Bollwinkel's who are one of the sweetest families in the ward. And of course going to Ankeny wouldn't be complete without having a nice Bible bash. This time we tracted into the preacher for an E-free church. We actually talked to his wife first who said that they loved the Mormon missionaries and that her husband would love to talk with us, big red flag. So she went and got him and we had at it. It actually ended up being a really civil bash/discussion. They always argue the same classic stuff- trinity, grace v. works and "adding to the Bible". They also always use the same verses to try and prove their points- John 1:1, Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 10:9, and of course Rev. 22:18. He was a good challenge but we definitely had the upper hand.
Aside from the exchanges we are also finding time in the evenings to work our area. On Monday we were following up with a potential when we looked over across the street to see about 10-15 Blacks ballin on a street ball court. The court was right off the freeway and overlooked downtown Des Moines. The ballers were legit, sleeveless shirts, saggy pants, tattoos, etc. So we walked over and challenged them to a game in our church clothes. They were way cool about it and we played some 2 on 2. It was so funny because all of them who weren't playing were cheering for us to win and every time we scored or made a move they would go crazy and yell stuff like "he got handles" or "he had the Holy Spirit on that one!" We ended up beating them and bet church on it so we should have an interesting crowd with us Sunday.
Those were the highlights of the week. We should have at least one investigator at church tomorrow which will feel so good! I love you all and hope you have a great week!
Love
Elder Jergensen
