Hey family!
Sorry for the late email today. We had service today that kept us busy all day. It was really fun though. The whole Des Moines zone got to go to this basketball tournament called "Hoopin' at the Dome". We all go and keep score for people from 3rd grade to 25+ years old who are playing in these games. Elder Blanchard and I got to "supervise" so we just went from court to court to watch all the good games. But while we were there you'll never guess who stopped in.... Elder Bird! It was so cool to get to see him again! It was super weird to see him in normal clothes. He is headed out to Maryland for an internship for the summer. He plans on going back to UVU for the fall semester though so I'm excited to be able to hang out with him down there.
This past week we were able to go on two exchanges which were very eventful. On Tuesday we were up in Boone. The whole town is pretty much full of rednecks. It was so funny because we were talking with this one redneck who didn't believe in Christ. He was in a greasy torn shirt and jeans, long greasy black hair, holding a beer can. So we ask him why he doesn't believe in Christ. His reply was "when Christ was born he was given gifts, but what happened when he died? He didn't get any gifts." After that profound insight he just stared at us like he had just proven that Christ obviously wasn't the son of God. We tried talking with him more but it didn't go very far. Bless his heart.
My favorite part of the Boone exchange was the next day when we had this lunch with a bunch of the ward members and one of their nonmember friends. The nonmember hasn't been taught by missionaries before but she is pretty much golden. She is a way cool lady too. It's so cute to see members try to do missionary work. The friend had questions about the church and the first thing that the members teach her is all the commandments (Word of Wisdom, tithing etc.). So she was asking us about tithing. We taught her tithing, promised blessings and all and she still wasn't too sure about it.
We finally got the lesson back on track and the lady was way into it. We could have set a date with her but she wants her husband to hear too so they can get baptized together. So things are good and we were explaining how church works and told her how she can go to a class with other people who are new to the church as well so it will be simple stuff.
We even had time to work our area this week. We had such a cool experience! We were walking around our puncy area street contacting people when we thought it would be a good idea to knock some doors along the way as well. We wanted to "power tract" where we only knock on doors where the lights are on or cars are outside. So we go to the first house which turns out to be an apartment. The very first door we knock on turns out to be a less active member named Tana who moved here from Houston but hasn't been to church for over 14 years. She is 30ish years old and talked with us for a good while. She left her husband and came here to get away from the bad relationship. Apparently her mom had been wanting her to find the church up here and go. As we talked with her she kept saying, "Dang it, how can I deny this is a sign when you come knocking on my door. It is definitely time for me to get back to church." She now wants to be taught and should be at church tomorrow. It's so cool how something as simple as knocking on a random apartment door can be so inspired.
So it felt way good to do some real missionary work this past week. The bulk of our week, however, was spent doing transfers and now transfer planning. Elder Blanchard and I are staying together for another transfer so I will be killing him off. I love seeing the transfer meeting in action though. It just really strengthens my testimony on how every missionary needs to be with the companion they are with, in the area they are assigned. It isn't us just throwing names up on a board but every move is prayerful and inspired. This truly is the Lord's work and it is done His way. I love you guys!
Love
Elder Jergensen
P.S. Do you know Justin Liechty from Wellsville? He is coming to our mission this transfer.
P.P.S. Alexis looks so grown up in the pictures!! The office staff keeps saying that Elder Blanchard needs to marry Alexis. Haha!
